What is natural style for guinea pigs?

Keeping guinea pigs natural style means a diet suitable for guinea pigs’ digestive system, plenty of living space, and no forced handling. It follows the artgerechte haltung (literally: species-appropriate keeping) that it supported by extensive German research.

Guinea pigs have been domesticated for thousands of years. So it is not the same as keeping them “as they would live in the wild”. Rather, natural style for guinea pigs means considering their biological needs and instincts. Research has shown that their digestive system is geared towards an entirely plant-based diet. In addition, instincts left over from their wild counterparts makes them prey animals, who are not naturally “tame”. Natural style means building a relationship of mutual trust between guinea pig and caretaker, with curiosity rather than fear or resignation leading the way.
